Have you ever felt stuck and then suddenly found hope? Blind Bartimaeus sat by the road, rejected, alone, and dependent on those who had ostracized him. Even his name simply meant “son of Timaeus”… his true identity lost. Have you ever wondered whether suffering is punishment for wrongdoing? When speaking about Bartimaeus, John 9:3 answers the question: “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” Jesus said, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him.” Bartimaeus heard that Jesus was coming as he sat alongside the road. How would Jesus hear his cry above the crowd? Three points stand out: 1) Bartimaeus cried out in anguish, and Jesus heard his desperation. 2) He recognized Jesus as the Son of David—the Messiah who could deliver him—and persisted despite rebukes of himself, “Have mercy on me!” 3) Jesus heard his anguish. He stopped and asked, “What do you want me to do for you?” Bartimaeus answered, “I want to see.” Jesus restored his sight, and Bartimaeus followed Him enthusiastically. Jesus sets us free and we must not return to our old lives but embrace the new ones. This is a story of faith, persistence, and recognizing Jesus as King.
